Physical Education

Being a sports person at Cubitt Town

At Cubitt Town Primary School, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, in addition to developing their health, fitness and wellbeing. PE is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the pupils have access to a wide range of activities, developing a love of physical activity and the basis for healthy, active lives.

Our long term plan is broad and balanced, allowing children to access a wide variety of high quality PE and sports provision. Skills are cumulative as the children progress through the school. We begin with a focus on the fundamental movement skills (ABC's) and physical literacy, then moving onto skills and activities that can be transferred to different sports. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximize learning for all children. Children with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation.

The curriculum is further enhanced by providing opportunities across the year groups for children to take part in inter and intra school competitions to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. As an Active School, we aim to ensure that the children participate in active learning lessons. This involves incorporating moments within lessons whereby the children can be active. We also encourage active playtimes through the use of Y6 Sports leaders and we take part in the Daily Mile initiative to ensure that we are giving children at our school the best possible chance of achieving the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, and work as part of a team. Oracy is used throughout the PE lessons for problem solving and skill sharing to ensure the best possible learning.

Children in Years 4 and 5 attend swimming lessons at the local swimming pool where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes. In addition to PE in curriculum time, we provide opportunities for children to access extracurricular physical activity through an extensive range of sporting and active clubs throughout the year.

PE Kit

Children should wear their PE kit to school on the day that they have PE, as we do not get changed at school.

The PE kit consists of:

  • House colour PE t-shirt (available to buy from the school office)
  • Black pumps/plimsolls/sports trainers
  • Tracksuit bottoms/shorts
  • Long sleeve t-shirt / jumper if weather is cold

Please note that football strips will not be accepted as PE kit.
