About our Curriculum

Our Curriculum Intent

At Cubitt Town Primary School, we believe that education has the power to transform lives, and that all children deserve the chance to fulfil their potential. We have designed our rich and balanced new curriculum with this aim in mind, around three core principles: Inspiration, aspiration and communication.

Inspiration

To develop inquisitive and critical thinkers with a life-long love of learning

We aim to provide our children with the subject specific knowledge, skills and understanding to reach and exceed their potential academically, physically and artistically. We aim to cultivate positive learning behaviours and foster a genuine love of learning through well-structured units of learning taught in engaging and exciting ways. Children are encouraged to think deeply and to question what they are taught, to develop curiosity and to think critically about the world around them.

Aspiration

To develop active citizens with an appreciation of the role they can play in shaping the 21st century

We want our children to recognise that they can be the architects of their own destiny, and that they have a role in shaping the society in which they live. Children are encouraged to see themselves in the disciplines they study day-to-day, as historians, geographers, artists, musicians etc. Through regular interaction with the world of work and professionals from a range of sectors, our children are given a window into possible futures. This includes a strong emphasis on STEAM careers and vocations.

We also wish to instil in our children a sense of citizenship, both within Britain and as global citizens beyond their lived experience. This involves exposing our children to a range of experiences and to engage with the culture they live in and to understand the cultures of others.

Communication

To develop confident communicators who have a voice and feel empowered to use it

We want all of our children to develop the confidence and skills to communicate effectively, which is why oracy is central to our curriculum offer. From job interviews to civic engagement, we see the ability to talk effectively in a range of contexts as key to becoming successful members of society, and as a tool for social mobility. As such, spoken communication skills are taught both explicitly and in a range of cross-curricular contexts. Our curriculum also reflects the importance of digital literacy and communication, as we aim to prepare our children for life in the computer-age. ICT outcomes therefore weave throughout the subjects in our curriculum.
